School and Educational Visits
A cruise on the Lancaster Canal is the ideal day out for pupils of all ages. They will have great fun, and learn a lot too, taking in canalside views and commentaries about canal history and local wildlife. Scenery ranges from cityscapes to countryside, and the area is home to ducks, swans, moorhens and kingfishers.
If your school is looking for a fun, interactive and educational experience all about nature and wildlife, then you’ve come to the right place.
Our school sessions are designed to bring children out of the classroom and get them exploring the natural world that surrounds them. They will learn about curriculum topics and will be encouraged to take part in all activities which include arts and crafts, fun and games and asking and answering questions about British wildlife.
All the children get involved with our wildlife expert and with his curriculum based work he gets everyone involved in the discussions, educational games and the nature spotting as we sail along!
Children are kept refreshed with some cordial and not forgetting teachers who also receive a tea/coffee whilst on board!
"The cruise covered areas of the curriculum such as Science, Geography, Art, Technology & History when the crew spoke about the wildlife, habitats, history of canals, artwork on boats, aqueducts and geographical features. Pupils gathered information and put together a journal. This allowed them to research areas of interest to them and further their understanding independently. The pupils developed their research and language skills, knowledge of possible career paths and they learnt to cooperate with outside speakers."

"Over the past two years, we have worked with Lancaster Canal Boats to hold curriculum based boat trips on the Lancaster Canal. These trips are intended to provide pupils with an understanding of the history, nature and wildlife of the Lancaster Canal and the Grade I listed Lune Aqueduct in particular. The sessions have taken a half day each and we have received extremely good feedback from the teachers at Dallas Road School. The cruises provide an outstanding learning environment, as the pupils can listen to our tutor, Russ Hedley, while travelling along the canal in a safe and secure way. As the sessions progress, the pupils are encouraged (not that they need any encouragement!!) to look at the environment which they are passing through and make observations to their classmates and teachers. The cruises are well managed, safe and provide an excellent range of refreshments for the pupils and teachers. These trips have been a real success for our organisation, thanks to Lancaster Canal Boats."
